Description: This is an unusual and thought provoking Antique Old 19th c. Primitive American Folk Art Oil Painting on canvas, laid on Masonite board, approximately dating to the second half of the 1800's. This work depicts a young girl in a pink dress and wide brimmed hat. She stands in a rural open clearing and holds a large axe, standing in front of a huge tree which she has presumably chopped down. In the distance, a small farmhouse and tree line can be seen. Something about the image is unsettling, as if there is more to the story that we as the viewer do not know. This piece does not appear to be signed, but perhaps you recognize the artist or their work? Approximately 18 x 22 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 8 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches. Very good condition for well over 100 years of age, with some minor paint loss in the lower left corner, and moderate edge wear and gilding loss to the vintage frame (please see photos.) This piece appears to have been restored some time in the 1950's, with the canvas being laid on Masonite board, and mounted in a fancy and expensive 50's frame, which some writing on the back of the frame describes as "Bonanza." This work was acquired in Southern California, but likely originates from somewhere on the East Coast or Southeastern United States. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer.
