Description: Wonderful antique late 19th c hand carved wood folk art miniature trinket box elaborately decorated with an array of animals, birds, and flowers. Found in Shelby County, Ohio. This little box measures 3 1/2" long X 2" deep X 1 1/2" high. It has a tiny brass key that appears to be only decorative. It fits the keyhole but it does not work. The lid on the box is unattached. I believe it may have had a fabric hinge. There are traces of old blue fabric lining. The carvings on the top lid are vine-like leaves and flowers with a little bird in each corner. On the front panel is a sitting squirrel. The is a bird on one side and a goat on the other. The back panel features a running lion. The bottom has the initials 'JVW' handwritten in ink, as pictured. Very good antique condition. Top lid is unattached, as pictured.
