Ironically, Eastlake had little to do with most of the furniture associated with his name, as it was the result of a misunderstanding. Eastlake wrote a commentary on what he thought elegant furniture should look like and included descriptions and designs by actual furniture makers. However, after Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery, and Other Details was released in the US in 1872 (published in England in 1868), designers started using his name for their products. Of course, Eastlake tried to correct the error, but nobody listened. So, here we are a century and a half later, appreciating the works of a man who actually decried some of the furniture named for him. Nevertheless, Eastlake Furniture is here to stay, and we’re about to teach you how to identify Eastlake design. The primary woods used for Eastlake furniture were oak and cherry, while rosewood and walnut were also used to a lesser degree These woods were perfect because manufacturers tried to emphasize the wood grain during construction. One of the problems Charles Eastlake had with the Victorian furniture of his day was embellishment. He thought there was more beauty in simple, geometric designs than grand arches and complex motifs.I could not find a maker's mark or label on this piece. It does resemble the carpet rockers with labels manufactured by E.W.
