Description: It is the purpose of this study to add to the historical knowledge of the Santa Clara mission by making an inventory of these books and manuscripts which were collected during the years 1777-1851. The study has included an evaluation of the works which now remain in the mission collection on the university of Santa Clara campus. The nature of the work has made it necessary to trace the historical background of the first Missionaries who brought the books from Spain and Mexico and Baja California to the Santa Clara Mission, and to study to some extent the conditions of the mission life which prompted the compilation of the records which comprise the manuscripts in the collection.
