1958 Last NASCAR Daytona Beach Race & 1958 Southern 500 both in Color on DVD!

Description: 1958 DAYTONA BEACH RACE Plus: 1958 SOUTHERN 500 This is a genuine Rare Sportsfilms, Inc. copyrighted DVD The last race ever run on Daytona Beach, plus the 1958 Southern 500 at Darlington are now both available to racing fans and historians on a beautiful 41-minute full COLOR DVD from Rare Sportsfilms! Outstanding camera shots capture the spirit of those great Daytona Beach racing classics of days gone by! Pre-race emphasis is on eventual winner Paul Goldsmith and his #3 black & gold ’58 Pontiac, prepared by legendary mechanic Smokey Yunick. The car is shown inside and out being built according to NASCAR rules and specifications. You’ll even get a ride around the old beach and road course with Goldsmith describing the track as you go! Watch the cars during qualifying on the famous “Measured Mile” including Buck Baker’s ’58 Chevrolet, Jimmy Thompson in his #55 ’57 Pontiac, the #2 ’57 Chevy of Frankie Schneider, Marvin Panch’s #98 ’57 Ford, and #916, a ’58 Chevy driven by Dean Layfield. You’ll see racing action not only on the beach, but also along the 2-mile paved backstretch! On lap 11, Wilbur Rakestraw crashes his #999 ’57 Ford in the north turn. Other accidents involve Dick Foley in his ’56 Chevy and Frank Thompson in #40, a ’57 Ford. Later in the race, Fireball Roberts and Phil Orr tangle in the north turn. Great scenes show runner-up Curtis Turner banging bumping other cars and broadsliding through the turns in a frantic effort to catch Goldsmith near the end of the race! The dramatic finish is shown with first Goldsmith, then Turner each missing the north turn and sliding through the safety markers at the end of the course. Goldsmith beats Turner by only a few car lengths to win the closest race ever run on the old Daytona Beach and Road Course! Also included on this DVD is the 1958 Southern 500 at Darlington! Shown are race film clips from past Southern 500 classics, as well as all the thrills, excitement and danger of the 1958 race, won by Fireball Roberts in his white #22 year-old ’57 Chevy! Pre-race preparation in the garage area is covered as well as qualifications, the downtown parade and the beauty contest the night before the race. Eddie Pagan’s #45 ’58 Ford is on the pole and before the race you’ll see great closeup shots of drivers Joe Weatherly, Buck Baker, Speedy Thompson, Curtis Turner and eventual winner Fireball Roberts. Once the race starts, there are thrills aplenty! On lap seven, Don Kimberling’s #60 ’58 Chevy hits the guardrail and spills flaming gasoline! This is the race in which three different drivers in three separate crashes each fly over the first turn and out of the track! First, Eddie Pagan smashes through the first turn guardrail, ripping out the fence and rolling down the 40-foot embankment! The first turn barrier is unable to be repaired, so the race is restarted after officials warn the drivers to stay away from the upper groove in turn one, but within 20 miles, Eddie Gray’s ’57 Ford goes flying right through the hole in the fence and out of the track also! On lap 202 Jack Smith hits oil in the turn and his car goes sailing out over what’s left of the guardrail and lands near the site of the Pagan and Gray wrecks! Joe Weatherly, Fireball Roberts and Curtis Turner are all shown making pit stops during the race! Saving his car throughout the afternoon while still keeping the leaders in sight, Fireball Roberts goes into the lead on lap 169. Junior Johnson and Buck Baker trade second place, but neither can catch Roberts. Fireball wins, but not before Herman Beam in his light blue Chevy goes out of control and slides into the pits – backwards! A happy Roberts is shown in Victory Lane with Miss Southern 500, beautiful Judy Austin of Sumter, South Carolina. Shipping is only $3.00 on this item, which will be sent by Media Mail.
