1954 Mongolian-English Dictionary in 3 Vols by Folke Boberg

Published by Förlaget Filadelfia in Stockholm. 1954-5, Vol I: 768pp, Vol II: 745pp, Vol III: 600pp, 7 x 9.5", 8vo, half black leather with gilt spine and brown boards, marbled text-blocks. In fair condition with a decent amount of exterior wear, especially to volume two. Each volume has chipping, creasing and breakages to the leather on the spine. While intact, volume two has considerable exterior joint-wear and interior hinge-wear. General rubbing to exterior boards. Age-related toning and foxing to pages. Remnants of the previous owner's use seen in stray pen markings and faculty stamps in all three folios. Please see our photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. Scarce complete three volume set of dictionaries on Mongolian, translated into English. Mongolian is spoken by the Mongols and other closely related Mongolic peoples who are native to modern Mongolia and surrounding parts of East and North Asia. This specific set of books once resided in the prestigious library of language scholar and collector of obscure dictionaries, Johannes Rahder (1898-1988). Rahder was a Dutch Orientalist and professor of Japanese at the University of Leiden from 1931 through 1946, and at Yale University from 1947 through 1965. He was depicted in the work of the legendary Langston Hughes' (1901-1967) 'I Wonder, I Wander'. After a brief meeting between the two figures on the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1933, Hughes recognized Rahder as being a "...famous authority on obscure Oriental languages".
