Description: 1916 Vintage Press Photo by UNDERWOOD AND UNDERWOOD. Erzurum, the chief city of Turkish Armenia, has fallen before the assault of the Russians and is now occupied by the victors. Grand Duke Nicholas, in chief command of the Russian forces in the Caucasus, has telegraphed the Czar of the victory. Unofficial reports early this month said that Field Marshal von der Goltz, with 80,000 men, was besieged in the city with provisions for only a fortnight. The capture of Turkey's northern stronghold is considered of great strategic importance. From the city, roads radiate in all directions and it is thought that with Erzurum as a base of supplies the Russians will be able to come to the relief of the besieged British in Kut-el-Amora, the city is reported in flames. Erzurum is a city in eastern Anatolia, Turkey. It is the largest city and capital of Erzurum Province and is 1,900 meters above sea level. Erzurum had a population of 367,250 in 2010.
