As-is condition with typical age-related wear to extremities of volume 1 and volume 2 and 3 are disbound. A good deal of scuffing and rubbing to to once marbled boards of volume 1. Additionally major chipping to spine, and some cracking and splitting to upper and lower joints. Volumes 2 and 3 contain paper boards, although completely disbound. Volume 2 has a detached back board. General age-related toning and foxing to pages in all folios, with a good deal of marginalia and faculty stamps from previous owners. This set is the original extremely rare first edition of Russian-French-Mongolian Dictionaries: the full set of Volumes 1 through 3. There is an Introduction in Russian and French in each volume. These volumes were authored by Jozef Kowalewski (1801-1878). Kowalewski was a Polish Orientalist, and studied the Mongolian language and Tibetan Buddhism. This specific set of books once resided in the prestigious library of language scholar and collector of obscure dictionaries: Johannes Rahder (1898-1988). Rahder was a Dutch Orientalist and professor of Japanese at the University of Leiden from 1931 through 1946, and at Yale University from 1947 through 1965. He was depicted in the work of the legendary Langston Hughes' (1901-1967) 'I Wonder, I Wander'. After a brief meeting between the two figures on the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1933, Hughes recognized Rahder as being a " ‘...famous authority on obscure Oriental languages' '.
