1755 Rare EVELYN SCULPTURA HISTORY ART CHALCOGRAPHY ENGRAVING COPPER Mezzotinto

Description: I have here for sale a SCARCE book entitled SCULPTURA; OR, THE HISTORY AND ART OF CHALCOGRAPHY, AND ENGRAVING IN COPPER: with an ample Enumeration of the mast renowned MASTERS and their WORKS. To which is annexed, A New Manner of Engraving or MEZZOTINTO, communicated by HIS HIGHNESS PRINCE RUPERT. With engraved portrait frontispiece and 2 fold out plates, 1 of which is a facsimile. This second edition was published in 1755 by J.PAYNE, London. Prince Rupert returned to England at the Restoration in 1660 he brought with him the new art of mezzotint, which he demonstrated to the members of the Royal Society, including John Evelyn. In 1662 Evelyn produced this treatise on printmaking which contains a small mezzotint by Prince Rupert known as the Little Executioner: the first mezzotint to be published in England. Although it is now known that Prince Rupert did not invent the art of mezzotint, as Evelyn claimed, he not only introduced it to England, but also invented the mezzotint rocker: a wide curved tool with teeth which allows half-tones to be created. Evelyn's publication formed part of a project to compile a history of trades, as recommended by the Royal Society's muse, Francis Bacon. Provenance: 1st: William Eaton, 2nd Baron Cheylesmore (1843-1902), leading collector of British mezzotints and other art; his armorial bookplate. Nicely bound in full leather boards. Board corners are bumped and a little age wear to the boards. New leather spine. Gilt title lettering on the spine. New endpapers. Toning through the book.
