Fine example of Bowen’s fascinating broadside map of the Atlantic which was of great interest in the opening days of the French and British-French conflict in the Americas that would expand into the Seven Year’s War. This is a detailed map of the Atlantic Ocean and the Eastern seaboard of North & South America along with the Western seaboard of Europe extending from Ireland to Guinea on the Gold Coast of Africa. Included are details concerning the sailing routes of Spain and England to their various territorial possessions in the New World, along with notes regarding the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Carolinas and extensive annotations & notes regarding the British Colonies in North America & the currents of the Atlantic. The tracks showing the “Course to New York &c” and “Course to Boston in New England” are clearly delineated In the North Atlantic. Other routes include “Upper course to Carolina & Virginia” and “Course of the galleons and flota”. At top is “A Table Comparing this Chart with Mr. Popples great Map of the British Empire in America”. Also a section of text at the top pertains to trade winds, with explanation of why the course to Virginia lies far to the south. Extensive notes below the title cartouche concern improvements to “the part relating to the British Dominions in America”. Included is the separate leaf of text from the 1755 magazine describing this map (see final photo). This is an original about 225 years old, not a reproduction. Well printed in black on laid period paper, finely engraved with descriptive details and a large title cartouche at lower right. In overall fine antiquarian condition, originally notched for folding - tight margin at left where the map was notched to facilitate folding into the original magazine.
