The duodecimo series of "Elzevirs" became very famous and very desirable among bibliophiles (like ourselves), who sought to obtain the tallest and freshest copies of these books. Although it appears the family was involved with the book trade as early as the 16th century, it is only known for its work in some detail beginning with Lodewijk Elzevir. The fame of the Elzevir editions rests chiefly on the works issued by the firm of Bonaventura and Abraham Elzevir. Their Greek and Hebrew impressions are considered inferior to those of the Aldines and the Estiennes, but their small editions in 12mo, 16mo, and 24mo, for their elegance of design, neatness, clearness, regularity of type, and beauty of paper, cannot be surpassed. Daniel Elzevirium was the son of Bonaventura. Publius Ovidius Naso (43 BC - AD 17/18), known in English as Ovid, was a Roman poet who lived during the reign of Augustus. He was a younger contemporary of Virgil and Horace, with whom he is often ranked as one of the three canonical poets of Latin literature. Today, Ovid is most famous for his Metamorphoses, a continuous mythological narrative in fifteen books written in dactylic hexameters. This is a beautifully bound set, in Latin, on Ovid's works in three volumes. Bound in 18th century red moroccan leather with intricate gilt detailing, this is an extremely gift worthy set. Later Elzevir edition (first edition was printed in 1652). RAREE1676FRSX11/23 - HK918
