1549 Tyndale New Testament RARE Bible KJV William Tyndale MARTYR English

Description: THE NEW TESTAMENT WILLIAM TYNDALE 1549 [BIBLE – NEW TESTAMENT]. [TYNDALE (William), Translator.] [The newe Testament of the last translacion. By Wylliam Tyndall with the Prologes and annotacions in the merge[n]t, declaryng many harde places conteyned in the texte, also in the later ende foloweth the Epistles of the olde Testament.] [Imprinted (at London: by Wyllyam Tylle), in the Year of our Lorde God 1549]. Item Description: Small 4to. unpaginated, pp. [574] (of 584), wanting five leaves only: the title, Nn1, Nn8 (final leaf of text, colophon), and Ii1-2 (Table). Fry’s Number 18. Herbert states that this edition was “probably printed in 1548; the title and preliminaries being added in 1549.” Thus, this text likely entered circulation in the early spring of 1549. Slightly soiled at extremities, and lightly browned throughout; B2 with old repair to a tear; old repair across N6; Nn7 cut-round and crudely inlaid; edges slightly frayed in places, a few other small tears and smudges; generally, much-thumbed throughout. Modern calf, preserving the original covers with a blind-roll panel inlaid.Historical Provenance: Tyndale’s carefully revised translation of the New Testament was first printed at Antwerp in 1534 and it was only after the accession of Edward VI in 1547 that its publication was allowed in London. Tyndale’s revised edition of 1534 ‘shows his mature thought, and skill, and in many ways improves on [his] 1526 version. He wrote for it a long prologue about translation, explaining among other things the importance of appreciating the Hebrew influence on New Testament Greek, something not widely understood before ... There are now marginal cross-references and notes, many only a single word, and acting as location-finders rather than exposition, though Tyndale clarifies and explains New Testament life and doctrine in longer notes’ (Oxford DNB).
All editions of Tyndale’s translation are rare, and the majority of surviving copies are (to a lesser or greater degree) imperfect. The often-semi-literate inscriptions and pen trails in this copy, dating into the early 18th-century, attest to the popularity and durability of his text.
Textual Provenance: “Thomas Jameson”, “Henry [?]tomye” (G8); “John Charnock His Book 1708” (I4), “John Charnock his Book 1704 Jno son to John Charnock Borne July the 9 Betwix tow am [sic]” (N2v); early signature “Thomas Wallentyn” (Ee2v); “... walke not after the lusts of ye flesh but after the wyll of god” (marginal note on Gg7v); “my granfather died January the 5. twelf and owone in the morning 1704” [by John Charnock] (Hh2v); “John son to John Charnock Borne July the 9 Betwix tow and 3 in the morning 1699” (Hh3r); “Thomas Valentyne me me” and “Robert Abbot of ?Worslaye” (Kk3v); “Richard vall lan tyne is my name and withe my hande I wrote this same god make me a good mann” (Ll4v); “George longe oweth this boke god” (Mm1v); “A man with out lerning as Cats so may mool [mewl] ... of clay and in the beg[in]ning god”; “a man of understanding is ... kno[w]ne by his comendacon”; “John ?Rielton is my name and with my hand made / and if my hand it bin ...”, “Robert Valentyne owathe thys” (Nn7r). Herbert 77. STC 2855. Copies at British Library, the Bodleian [imperfect], St Edmund's College Ware, John Rylands Library and Trinity College Dublin. In the United States, this edition is listed as being present at the New York Public Library [however it does not appear on the library’s online catalogue CATNYP]). Darlow & Moule 77 (pointing out that the final two leaves of tables, signed Ii1-2, “do not properly belong to the book ... they were printed by T. Peter, not by W. Tylle. Apparently they were borrowed from some edition in which Ii was their correct signature ... and added just before publication”). The British & Foreign Bible Society copy on deposit at Cambridge lacks the title, preliminaries, B-C7 and the final two leaves.__________________________________ We specialize in early printed English Bibles, books, manuscripts, and objet d’art.
