On young trunks and on branches, the bark is thin, smooth, and pale gray; on old trunks it is deeply furrowed and dark. Use as a large shade tree, street tree or in parks. There are no diseases connected with this tree. It is entirely possible for black maple trees to live 200 years. They flourish best in moist, well drained soils, but also perform well in soils too dry for sugar maple. Providing food for insects and animals, such as moths and bees, this tree grows best in full sun or light shade, but is shade tolerant, especially when young. Many mammals and birds also use black maple trees for shelter, nesting sites and roosts. Birds also feed on larvae found in bark crevices.
